Playing on keeping it simple, we decided to start with a phenomeNOM... *grooaaan* and did a thorough tasting and indulging of our first ever ONLINE, yes we said online, stay with us, Chinese delivery restaurant. So college students and single people of the world rejoice!
Hot Wok delivery is a lot like other Chinese delivery in that you get your basic Americanised version of Far Eastern cuisine covering the basics of egg rolls, wonton soup, and sweet and sour chicken. The customer service is excellent and seems to come second nature to the employees. All the way up to calling you to confirm that they recieved your online order and giving you an ETA, but also giving you the chance to make any corrections to your order. But where they really stand on their own is in taste and preparation redundancy (this is a good thing). For the first order of business, we tried the vegetable delight (left side of picture) and the Mongolian shrimp over white rice sided (right side) with beef egg foo young. Thomas is a bit of a steak and eggs kind of guy; so the egg foo young was for him, the veggies were for Emily.
Aside from the enrapturing aromas, the food's aesthetics were very pleasing to the eye, despite the fact that they are delive
red in your typical tin trays, but hey, when it boils down to it they are safe and sturdy enough to hold your food for delivery from the wok to your salivating gullet. The rice almost seemed to glow and carried a fluffiness that soaks in the surrounding flavors and creates a wonderful rice gravy that compliments the vegetables in various ways. The balance of spices and natural flavor can definitely be found and there was never a hint of too much.
The first thing in our order mentioned was a vegetable delight. While delightful it wasn't the highlight of the meal; the veggies were cooked nicely but overall had a bland flavor and the white sauce that it was tossed it was practically invisible. They also have a big love of REALLY big pieces of white onion, which may turn off some, we didn't mind.
The Mongolian shrimp was a fireworks display of spice and aromatic flavor. Even whole dried chili's are used and to Thomas and Emily, that suits them just fine. Being suckers for anything hot and spicy, they ordered the shrimp as spicy as they could and they delivered. Not the spiciest thing you'll find by far, but it is great for satisfying that little guilty pleasure of yours.
Finally, for those that have never ordered it, egg foo young is essentially an oriental omelet fried, and served in a brown peanut gravy and topped with small green onions. It's the
n placed over a bed of rice and eaten. Unfortunately for Thomas' egg foo young, at least a quarter out of two patties never make it to his plate as he is sometimes seen digging it right from the box when he has it practically to himself. Though one of his favorites (obviously) it didn't really strike him as well as it normally did. The edges of the patties seemed to have been made of of crisp over oiled and fried egg (not too pleasing to the palette) and the gravy was a little watery, though having never had actual (and by actual, we mean not fabricated for mass production in the span of a hiccup, but prepared and placed with purpose, etc etc). The egg was prepared very well, but I think the thin gravy allowed too much moiture to get in before it reached them, and the beef tasted like it had seen a bit too much skillet time.
But to sum up the experience, not only are you recommended, just for the novelty of it, you can sit back on you chair, make a few keystrokes, and walaa! Hot, and wonderful Chinese delivery arrives at your door for you and your guests... or just you. ;P
